July 5, 2016 – Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado – I was hiking to Adams Falls in RMNP. The trailhead is just outside of Grand Lake, CO and goes past the falls and then farther into the backcountry. The hike to the falls isn’t that long, only about .3 miles.
As we were walking, we came across a moose just off the trail eating some willows along East Inlet Creek. We gave her plenty of room and continued on up the trail. After a bit, you come to a fork in the trail which leads to you to the falls. The trail runs along the creek, and the fork basically took you around the moose – although the moose was long out of site by this point because of the forest.
We were just about to the falls, when I looked down and saw the moose. She had walked along the creek and her route and ours were about to intersect. She was now just off the trail. but a few yards below us. Then she decided she was going to move on and started walking straight towards us. Honestly, I don’t think she cared a whole lot that we were there. She just wanted to go up the hill, and she expected we would get out of the way.
I got behind the only protection I could find – small a tree. It was only a few inches in diameter and wouldn’t have offered much protection, but she headed up the hill and was gone.
